I started a band with a 7 year old

7 May

So I’m teaching this kid guitar every week.

He’s 7.

He likes skateboarding and tap tap revenge.

I have literally exhausted every teaching method until this week.

He came into my office and got out his little beginner guitar and I looked at him straight in the eyes and said, “are you ready?”

“….for what?”

“to start a band?”

“………..” (his mind racing to places of fame and fortune….the Disney Channel)

“We have to write songs and then get on itunes, but we have to come up with a band name and then song names.”

Then after he diligently learned the lesson for the day we spent the last few minutes coming up with names.  This is what he came up with…on his own.

Band Names: Rubber Bird, The Repenters, The Burning Hearts, Rocket, The Rising Sun, The Heart & The Soul, Everyone yell Jesus, It’s Raining Glory

Song Names: Shamin, Day & Night, Making Glory, Me & The Plains, Me & The Earth

I’ve never had a better guitar lesson in my life.

Thats amazing. Smart kid. Better than I have ever come up with in any of my tries. Seems you have passed on some of your cool music ability to him. Congratulations! The world always needs more Josiah.

    Josiah,

Can I say that I’m immensely jealous of your constant reading?

Outside of that, I needed to tell you how much this entry made me smile. Kids are so interesting to communicate with — they always tell things like it is and have no problem with learning and listening if it’s presented to them in just the right way. You’re just the right kind of person that people need as a Pastor — willing to listen, to talk, and encourage — and this exemplifies it. I bet he’s psyched! No doubt he looks up to you!

I’m a big fan of “Rubber Bird”! Thanks for putting me in a good mood with this!

Thanks man! Yeah I dig ‘Rubber Bird’ as well….it’s got a swank to it that I think record execs would dig.
